Changes: Business is booming around Concord

 Old WEGO-AM building comes down

Crews tore down the small strip center at the corner of Cabarrus Avenue West and Yorktown in Downtown Concord last week.

The building had been an insurance office, barber shops and a tax office over the years. It also had been the studio and offices for WEGO-AM 1410 for many years.

As many of you know, Radio Free Cabarrus grew from the “ashes” left when the local AM station abandoned Cabarrus County to be simulcast programming from a Charlotte radio station.

Speculation is that the City of Concord may be buying the now vacant lot and turn it into a parking lot. There has also been speculation that one of the neighboring houses on Cabarrus Avenue might be bought by the city to expand the lot.

The location is just down the street from the new Concord City Municipal Building that is under construction.

Zaxby’s and fast food expanding

Zaxby’s, the chicken restaurant, is expanding in Cabarrus County with at least two new locations underway. The first is on Concord Parkway near the Walmart Neighborhood Market. There is a Taco Bell under construction beside it.

The other Zaxby’s is under construction at Afton Ridge off Kannapolis Parkway.

Chipotle, across from Carolina Mall, should open soon. It appears the building is just about complete including the interior.

That’s great news for fans of the burrito restaurant, but it might be bad news with increased the traffic it will create.

Housing boom

Grading is underway off Poplar Tent Road for another apartment complex (hundreds of units) near the charter school and Goodwill. Another complex is expected further down Poplar Tent near the former softball field across from Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church.

Several other housing projects are either on the drawing board or in the early talks. At least two of the projects look to be mixed use, like Afton Village or even Birkdale.

The Independent Tribune reported on two developments in Harrisburg this past week:

700 houses proposed in Harrisburg

 What’s going on?

We’ve got a lot of questions about other projects underway or that will shortly be underway.  A lot dirt is moving and buildings are going up.

We’re told that surveyors were at the old Quaker Steak and Lube property off Bruton Smith Boulevard and across the street this week. Drop us a line if you know anything about that project or others.

Does anybody know what is going on in front of CMC-NorthEast’s parking deck? Water has been running onto Concord Parkway for months.

There are orange cones and a weathering piece of plywood covering the apparent work site. It sure seems wasteful to run water into the street for so long, not to mention when it freezes.

Changes in the Concord Mills area and AMC 24

AMC has also added new Coca-Cola Free Style soda machine at the concession stand.

AMC 24 Theaters at Concord Mills has added a new bar, MacGuffins, and switched to Coca-Cola Free Style soda machines.

It’s just one of many changes at Concord Mills and along Concord Mills Boulevard. New buildings are going up in front of Lowe’s. Right now it looks like one will be occupied by a mattress store.

Grading is under way for Christenbury Corners shopping center across the corner of the intersection at Derita Road.
