Charlotte 49ers open Thursday, Davidson Wildcats Saturday

49ers’ second football season begins at Campbell

Thirteen players with ties to Cabarrus County will be on the rosters for Campbell and Charlotte when the Niners travel to Buies Creek.

Campbell’s team, led by former First Assembly coach and Carolina Panther Mike Minter, have five former Eagles: Damon Simmons, Donte Simmons, Tyler Rhyne, Ugonna Awuruonye and David Larson. All played for Minter at First Assembly, now cfa Academy. Chris Beaty of Northwest Cabarrus is also on the Camels’ roster.

The 49ers have Kalif Phillips of A.L. Brown, Blake Brewer of Cannon School, R.J. Rhinehart of Northwest Cabarrus, Quintin Gay of Central Cabarrus, and Danny Book and Jason Eury from Hickory Ridge. They all played a year ago for Coach Brad Lambert. Joining the Cabarrus County contingent this season is Weston Smith of Northwest Cabarrus. Smith had played baseball for the Niners but decided he would rather play football.

The game will be broadcast on WFNZ-AM 610 in Charlotte. The pregame show begins at 6 p.m. with kickoff at 7.
