Plans for 2017 football season

A few years ago Dr. Spencer Johnson wrote a book called “Who Moved My Cheese?” It’s good reading for anyone in business. Our cheese keeps moving and we must move to keep up with the changes.

Bob Brown and I started Radio Free Cabarrus in 2009 after the owner of the local radio station abandoned our community. Since then we have expanded our coverage and included video.

In the past year or so, the local AM station WTIX 1410 was purchased by people who see the value of local radio. They’ve expanded their operation to include Memories 98.3 FM. They will be broadcasting a game of this week this football season. That’s great news and we certainly support their efforts.

Another change has been at the N.C. High School Athletic Association, which is now requiring rights fees for regular season games. I don’t think they completely understand the impact of their fees. For companies like Radio Free Cabarrus it will mean less games will be broadcast.

RFC will continue to broadcast games live, but not every week and not as many. We will however continue to cover and report on games. Here is our basic plan for the 2017 football season:

  • A live scoreboard show (we haven’t come up with a name yet) will be broadcast each Friday night with live reports from games involving Cabarrus teams and others. This will be a work in progress and we will adjust as we go. There are a lot of exciting possibilities.
  • Select live video broadcasts of big games will be broadcast. We plan to ramp up our live broadcasts as the season heats up and as we get near the playoffs.
  • We will be open to suggestions. If you have ideas or comments I would love to hear them. Email me at plemmons.mark@gmail.com

Thanks for all the support you have provided. We pledge to continue our efforts to promote Cabarrus County sports including the schools, athletes and community organizations to the best of our abilities.
